The Porcelain Garden

For 36 years, I have specialized in a 19th Century porcelain art form called Lithophanes. A lithophane is a thin panel of porcelain, with variations in thickness on the front surface, which create an image when illuminated from behind. I carve the image in a thin layer of wax. I then make a plaster mold of the engraving. And finally, I cast porcelain from this mold. I then kiln fire the porcelain to achieve it's translucency. The finished lithophanes are quite striking.
