Born 1956 in Boston, Massachusetts, Tom Loeser is a woodworker and professor of art at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. From public seating fashioned from sheets of industrial felt cinched in to a cylindrical mass to cabinets made from hand-gauged and chiseled wood, Loeser has imbued materials with a distinctive character while making furniture with conceptual rigor. Loeser earned a BA from Haverford College in Pennsylvania in 1979, received a BFA from Boston University in 1983, and completed his MFA from the University of Massachusetts, North Dartmouth in 1992. His series of collapsible, kinetic plywood furniture garnered a silver medal from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce in England in 1982. In addition to producing studio furniture, Loeser has also worked on a number of public commissions and site-specific installations, and his work can be found in many important public collections including the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, the Cooper-Hewitt, the National Design Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York.
