Haystack/Art Schools Collaborative

More than 80 students from 10 Northeastern post-secondary schools gathered at the picturesque seaside campus of Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on the last weekend in September to attend the Haystack/Art Schools Collaborative event. This gathering was a first for Haystack, which typically hosts students for one or two week studio workshops in specific disciplines.

Craft Self-Esteem: 3 Hopeful Signs

Why is craft seemingly less prestigious than fine art?

Crafts Across the Country

The American Craft Council’s 34th annual flagship show at the Baltimore Convention Center this February featured the newest jewelry, clothing, furniture and home décor by 700 of the country’s leading craft artists, such as last year's winner Ani Kasten, who created Bottle Still Life. Beyond shopping opportunities, there were also new networking events on wholesale days and live demonstrations during the retail portion of the show.

More from Miami

Gallery owner Leslie Ferrin surfaced from Art Overload in Miami just long enough to offer up some of her thoughts on the fairs, festivities, the state of the market and share her photographs prior to getting back to business at her Pittsfield, Massachusetts gallery. Her self-defined mission was to look at the experience through the lens of craft material, technique and market.

Dispatches from the Land of Obama: SOFA Chicago, Opening Night Impressions

Can Chicago sustain its frenzied fervor over the election of hometown hero, President-Elect, Barack Obama? Can SOFA Chicago maintain its momentum on its 15 year anniversary? Can you drink wine while walking the aisles at any other time other than opening night? Some thoughts on these queries and more follow. What do you think?

Openings, Farewells, Honors

GlassLAB, a new collaboration between the Corning Museum of Glass and the Vitra Design Museum offers a live, up-close look at the eternal interplay, bringing Corning glassmakers and technicians together with leading designers for public demonstrations, in which concepts are rendered into hot-glass prototypes.
