The Elusive Man Gift

As the American Craft editor with the best beard, it falls on my broad, hairy shoulders to highlight some of the best handmade gift ideas for men, or as I like to call them: man gifts.

Man gifts are tough. Even just last week, at Thanksgiving, my mother kept inquiring as to what I wanted for Christmas, and nothing came to mind – a problem, it seems, that plagues even the manliest of men.

Eco-Chic Leather Jewelry

I'm so excited about my Heck Yes Craft pick for this week. Recently, a couple lucky ACC staffers and I had the pleasure of heading to Nancy Golden's home studio. You may know Nancy from her work as an interior designer and as former host of decorating shows on the HGTV and DIY networks. She also happens to be the mother of the delightful designer, Nate Berkus.

Video: Cordwainer Shoes

We had a chance to chat with longtime ACC show exhibitors Sara Mathews and Molly Grant of Cordwainer Shoes at the San Francisco show. Their handmade shoes are beautifully crafted, made out of fine leather and free of synthetic materials and toxic glues typically found in footwear. Here's what they had to say about shoes, shows, and the council's pet policy.

Lisa Sorrell's Handcrafted Cowboy Boots

"Always wanting you, but never having you, makes it hard to face tomorrow," crooned country legend Merle Haggard. I feel his pain as I drool over Lisa Sorrell's incredible handmade cowboy boots - wearable art that, for now, I can only afford to ogle. She builds each boot by hand, then collaborates with her customer to create a design inspired by vintage patterns but infused with the personality of the wearer.

Kara Ginther's Carved Leather

Kara Ginther started out carving leather Brooks saddles for bicycles, but she's recently branched out into "generally delightful leather miscellany," as she puts it. She takes custom commissions for leather carving, and more of her leather miscellany is available on Etsy.

Textures to Love at the Show

Unexpected textures abound at this year's ACC show in St. Paul. Sleek adjoins nubby, craggy erupts from lustrous, and subtle variations make lovely work even lovelier.

Kim Geiser's enamel jewelry is a study in rough and smooth. The artist uses stencils to add designs to her modernist pendants and recently started scratching graphite markings on the surfaces of her glossy pieces.
