Truly Artisan Homes

We're doing a lot of research for a timeline chronicling 70 years of achievements in the craft field that we'll be debuting in the August/September 2011 issue. Being a wood guy, I gladly dove into the woody details. Beyond the beautiful furniture of Sam Maloof, Wharton Esherick, and George Nakashima, it seems these artists did everything deliberately and with passion. It's really no surprise that these men, used to making things themselves, would spend their "free" time crafting their surroundings. After all, the urge to make, create, and build doesn't stop.

Artist without Borders

As a child, Tanya Aquiñiga straddled the line between Mexico and the United States. Now her exuberant work crosses boundaries between cultures, materials, even genres.

Crafting a Miracle

‘Tis the season of miracles, and Martin Ratermann is living proof. For nearly 40 years, the gifted woodworker has honed his craft, starting as several generations of his family did in the carpentry trade, and then developing his own furniture making business for which he creates stunning chairs, tables, and other pieces largely from Walnut grown in central Missouri.

Craft Storytellers

In 1983, 16 artists pitched in $400 apiece to open Show of Hands gallery in Denver.

A Master's Life Unfolds

Wharton Esherick needs little introduction in the craft world.

Man of Quality

Some have called Thomas Day the father of North Carolina’s furniture industry.

Studio Roeper

Florian Roeper's furniture is at once warm and cool, sensuous and cerebral, organic and industrial.
