Built to Last

Lizz Wasserman left behind a career as a mass-market clothing designer to launch her Popomomo line.

Eco-Chic Leather Jewelry

I'm so excited about my Heck Yes Craft pick for this week. Recently, a couple lucky ACC staffers and I had the pleasure of heading to Nancy Golden's home studio. You may know Nancy from her work as an interior designer and as former host of decorating shows on the HGTV and DIY networks. She also happens to be the mother of the delightful designer, Nate Berkus.

My Favorite Craft Timeline Entries

It's been a fun week around the office, seeing everyone's timeline highlights and hearing the reactions as people have received their copies of the magazine. I'll forgo a repeat pick of the launching of This Old House (possibly my favorite TV show growing up), but otherwise, here are my favorite entries in the 70-year craft timeline:

Lisa Sorrell's Handcrafted Cowboy Boots

"Always wanting you, but never having you, makes it hard to face tomorrow," crooned country legend Merle Haggard. I feel his pain as I drool over Lisa Sorrell's incredible handmade cowboy boots - wearable art that, for now, I can only afford to ogle. She builds each boot by hand, then collaborates with her customer to create a design inspired by vintage patterns but infused with the personality of the wearer.

Lorena Barriento's Hand-embroidered Treasures

Can thread be sexy? Lorena Barriento's hand-embroidered jewelry shouts, "Heck yes!" Her unique pieces are so glamorous, I'm ready to take them out salsa dancing. Vivid color combinations play off geometric patterns to create a balance of uninhibited wildness and impeccable craftsmanship. Some pieces feature bright ceramic or metal beads, adding to their playfulness. I particularly love how they evoke folk art yet remain distinctly modern.

We're making our Council newsletter collection from 1957-1986 accessible online.

Focus on Fibers at ACC

As fiber and textile aficionados settle in the Twin Cities this weekend for the Surface Design Association's biennial conference, we invite you to stop in and check out the new exhibit in our office: Focus on Fibers.

Boris Bally's Humanufactured Objects

Boris Bally's sophisticated reinvention of reclaimed street signs and found objects will rattle your mind. Bally transforms traffic signs into everything from entirely modern furniture to sleek jewelry and home decor items -- and even flatware! My favorite piece is a necklace created with 100 handgun triggers from Pittsburgh's "Goods for Guns" program. It's Bally's spin on the talismanic charms of aboriginal cultures, and he says, "this urban 'mojo' protects the wearer from the gun violence so prevalent in today's culture."
