Video: Michael Heller

We had a chance to talk with Heller Gallery's Vice President, Michael Heller, while we were at SOFA 2011 in Chicago. He's been in the craft world for a long time and has seen the studio glass movement grow and mature into the art form it is today, evidenced by breathtaking displays of glass work in Heller's booth and around the show. See what he has to say.

SOFA Chicago: Talking Shop with Ornamentum

In just under 10 years, Stefan Friedemann and Laura Lapachin have earned a far-reaching reputation witih their Hudson-based gallery Ornamentum, specializing in contemporary art jewelry. Founded in 2002, Ornamentum became in 2008 the first jewelry gallery accepted into Design Miami. This past summer, the couple took the illustrious gallery on the road – and overseas – to participate on Design Miami/Basel.

SOFA Chicago: Talking Shop with Snyderman-Works

Ruth and Rick Snyderman are true champions of craft. For 46 years, the couple has been exhibiting contemporary studio craft, first through The Works Gallery (which Ruth founded in 1965) and Snyderman Gallery, which the couple opened in 1983 as a venue for artists working in studio furniture and sculptural glass. In 1996, they combined operations, becoming the venerable Snyderman-Works Galleries that we know today in Philadelphia's lively Old City arts district.

Behind Renegade with Sue Daly

Renegade Craft Fair is the most notorious name of the multitude of indie craft fairs that are organized today. Having its modest start in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago in 2003, it is now held 10 times per year in six different cities showcasing the art, craft, and design of countless makers from across the country. This year marked another milestone for Renegade as it made a jump across the pond, bringing the event to London.

From a Tiny Town, Crimson Laurel Reaches the World

John Lara and David Trophia's Crimson Laurel Gallery, founded in 2002 in a small North Carolina town, has developed a national reputation among both buyers and artists. The gallery owners have not arrived at this good place by chance. They cite their approach to customers, their collection, the Internet, and their community as keys to their success. We set out to understand how they've grown and flourished in a tough economic climate.
