Sandra Byers, who creates beautiful porcelain forms from her home studio in Rock Springs, Wisconsin, says that porcelain, her preferred material, “comes to life in the sunlight.” She lovingly captures the grooves, membranes, ridges, and curves of things found in nature; her pieces are small, meant to be touched, held, examined, like a stone or other object found on a walk. Byers’ pieces are inspired by, and reminiscent of, a variety of these types of objects: Her work hints at, without imitating, the forms of mushrooms, nuts, stones, and, one of my favorite pieces, a wasp’s nest. Other pieces explore more general elements of nature’s designs, like Bend, Convolution, and Whorling.

In the palm of your hand, Byers’ works are highly textured, mesmerizing pieces; brought into the sunlight, they take on an otherworldly glow, recapturing a fundamental connection with nature.

Want more? You can see Sandra’s work in person this weekend (March 15-17) at our ACC Atlanta show – find her in booth 209.

Can’t get enough craft? Neither can we. Heck Yes Craft is a series of visual blog posts with a simple mission: to show off amazing work. Come back on Fridays for more.
