Glass artist Mira Woodworth contacted the American Craft council library earlier this fall to offer us back issues of glass magazines. We enjoyed a conversation with her about her glass, and now we have some new (old) magazines from her. Talk about a win-win!
Mira's mother, Christina Marquardt, greatly influenced her glass career 10 years ago when she collected these magazines, and subsequently gave them to Mira as inspiration. Mira was just learning about glass, and Christina was giving glass lessons in her driveway in San Diego.
Mira is now a 2012 NICHE Awards finalist in the recycled category for her work "Transitions," pictured above. Sponsored by NICHE magazine, the NICHE Awards program began in 1989 to celebrate excellence and innovation in American and Canadian fine craft. Award winners will be announced at the Philadelphia Buyer's Market of American Craft in February. Good luck, Mira!
The box of magazines that Mira donated to the library has some gems in it. Pictured is the glass model of the space colony on the cover of Glass Studio from 1981. Bob Schimel is the designer, and Robert Coleman is the maker. It is fabricated from plastic, glass, wood, and steel, and is 6 feet long by 4 feet in diameter.
To see more '80s glass inspiration from Mira (and the rest of our resources), please stop by the library!
