I love the wabi-sabi quality of these beautiful vessels and sculptures from artist Doug Johnston. He creates them using variations on a traditional crafting technique of coiling and stitching rope or cord (called “sash cord”), which is itself based on even older coil pot and basketry techniques. Yet there’s also something very modern about these forms. The baskets and bags are pleasingly minimalistic, while the tallest tower sculptures are Seuss-like in their whimsy, like otherworldly cacti. Bonus for west-coasters: Johnston will show many of his larger pieces at a pop-up exhibition at Creatures of Comfort in Los Angeles beginning October 20th.

Can't get enough craft? Neither can we. Heck Yes Craft is a series of visual blog posts with a simple mission: to show off amazing work. Come back on Fridays for more.
