Arny Weinstein’s handcrafted kaleidoscopes are dazzling works of art, inside and out. Within each object case, the Yonkers-based artist, formerly a computer scientist, creates beautiful, elaborate (but infinitely orderly) kaleidoscope images; in some scopes, Weinstein’s design accommodates multiple viewpoints, for exponentially more images. And, of course, there’s the design of the scopes themselves, which is what attracted my attention to begin with: elegant, contemporary fusions of two or more hardwoods, always in intriguing, inviting shapes. Weinstein’s scopes are enchanting, on their own, as decorative statements, but yet they beg to be picked up, examined, peeked into - and the intricate, imaginative views reward those who do.
