William Dawson, Ship, painted bones and wood. Photo: Courtesy of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts
William Dawson (1901-1990) was a self-made man and a self-taught artist. Dawson created an astonishingly varied body of work created from an assortment of materials including chicken bones, wood remnants, paint and other found objects. Memories of his childhood, his connection to the world around him and to popular culture, and his personal relationships all found their way into his work. In his totems, wood reliefs, and paintings, Dawson brings an exuberance to his depictions of animals and his portraits of friends, celebrities and political personalities.
