…by casting these fabric scraps and assembling them together, ... they may make a quieter but more honest portrait - a portrait of wrinkles, of fray, of loose threads. Let the subject be casting itself – not technical casting but casting thrown to the wind – casting that engenders an object imperfectly related to the original. - Maya Kini

Shibumi Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Sacramento/Bay Area based artist Maya Kini entitled "Silk," featuring jewelry made using silk, silver, bone, gold, steel, and enamel. "Silk" runs through March 31, 2013 at Shibumi Gallery.
Maya Kini speaks through both subject and material to address the cycle of generation, decay and transformation. Taking casts of age-damaged silk saris purchased in Benares, India circa 1960 to create jewelry, Kini puts forth new items of luxury while pointing to the history of these once exquisite garments. "Silk" is a show that confronts the complexities embedded in the materials of a jeweler. Gold and precious metals are presented as agents in a cycle of collection, use, and re-use played out over the centuries.
