Karen Karnes created some of the most iconic pottery of the late 20th and early 21st centuries and participated in several key cultural experiments of her time. Mark Shapiro will provide insight into her work and the communities in which she lived, including the Bronx "Coops".  Black Mountain College, NC and Gate Hill Cooperative, NY. Mark Shapiro has been a studio potter for nearly three decades and is the editor of A Chosen Path: The Ceramic Art of Karen Karnes, (2010) published by University of North Carolina Press. Karen Karnes received the American Craft Council’s Gold Medal in 1998.
