Lewis Knauss

Born 1947 in Macungie, Pennsylvania, Lewis Knauss is a fiber artist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For 28 years he was professor of textiles at Moore College in Philadelphia and retired from teaching in 2010. Through his work, Knauss explores the texture, color and singularities of the landscapes and places in which he lives and is deeply connected. His remarkable pieces are constructed of various fibers and materials that are intricately knotted and woven together, recalling a natural growth and marking the passage of time. Knauss earned a BS from Kutztown University in 1969 and an MFA from the Tyler School of Art in 1973. He has received numerous fellowships from both the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts and was recognized with the Lindbach Distinguished Teaching Award in 2007. Knauss’ work can be found in several private and museum collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Cooper-Hewitt, the National Design Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution, New York.
